Looking for your answer to the sodium test? Which has the higher content of sodium per serving? A bowl of Bran Bits, or a handful of tortilla chips?
The picture on the box sure makes it look like the Bran Bits are a healthy choice. Beware! The sodium content is high for only a half of cup of cereal.
Answer: Bran Bits (similar to Grape Nuts cereal) has 210 mg. of sodium
Tortilla Chip – 49 mg. of sodium
What does this mean for you?
The amount of sodium that the average person needs in their diet per day is between 1,500 mg to 2,400 mg. For people who suffer from high blood pressure, the amounts needed and required will be at the lower end of the range. Sodium collects and holds fluids, so too much sodium will cause you to retain fluids, make you feel bloated and keeps you from removing the toxins from your system.
Food for thought: 1 teaspoon of table salt contains 2,300 mg of sodium.
Yesterday I picked Wendy’s Very Berry Almond Chicken Salad for lunch. I was hungry and needed something quick to eat. It seemed like it would be healthy and good for me. Guess the sodium content with that choice? 1100 mg. Wished I would have looked that up before pulling into the drive – up. Here is the link that I used to reveal my faux pas!
